In the News: Chiropractic and Golf in Asheville

Are you an Asheville golfer suffering from back pain and considering chiropractic treatment?

A recent article from MarketWatch discusses the growing use of Chiropractic treatments by professional golfers. Because of the nature of the sport, many of these professionals experience muscle imbalances and spinal misalignment. The article contends that in addition to the treatment of injury, professional athletes in all disciplines are more commonly using holistic and integrated treatments in order to stay at the top of their game.

Whether you’re a pro or just a recreational player, chiropractic treatment can benefit both your overall health and your game. PGA Instructor Tom Ward, who has himself experienced multiple golf-related injuries, is convinced of these benefits. He recommends working with a chiropractor to analyze your stance while asking the following questions:

  • 1. Are you experiencing foot pain or balance problems?
  • 2. Are your feet forced to turn outwards on your backswing?
  • 3. Do you feel “off” or in pain after playing a round of golf?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing a disc problem, which would be one of the first things that need to be addressed. Further, it would be helpful to consult with your golf professional to modify your golf swing.

The modern golf swing, which attempts to maximize torso rotation in the backswing and follow-through, is pretty tough on the spine. The good news is that some recent studies have found that a shorter backswing can be equally if not more effective. And obviously, keeping your spine aligned in general is extremely important, which is where regular adjustments come into play.
