Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Part 2

This week, I’ll be covering common ailments that affect the knees and toes, and how Chiropractic can be used to treat them.

Knee X-Ray

Knees

The knee is a complex joint that relies heavily on ligaments and muscles for stability. It is also a major weight-bearing joint, which is why we often see pain in this area. Chiropractic treatment for the knee is much the same as for the shoulder. I would need to examine the joint to identify if there is an underlying issue, such as an injury, that needs to be addressed. Specific chiropractic manipulation and mobilization techniques would then be used on areas of restricted movement in the knee and surrounding joints, to increase movement, improve the function, and reduce pain. Soft tissue massage and rehabilitation exercises might also be part of a treatment program for the knee.

Toes

Did you know that numbness in your toes can actually be because of a pinched nerve in your outside ankle bone (or proximal fibula)? Many people experience this problem while using an elliptical machine or running. If you’re also experiencing back pain, then the cause could be a little bit higher up – in your hips or even your spine. As long as there are no other underlying issues, chiropractic adjustments should be able to correct the problem of numb toes. If numbness persists however, it’s important to pay attention and get it checked out right away. Here is a specific example of another common “toe” issue faced by River Ridge Chiropractic patients:

Hammer Toe: “As the toes curl under, they also begin to stiffen up along with the rest of the foot. In early or mild stages of hammertoe, MedlinePlus…recommends manipulation of the foot to help keep the toes moving and flexible. Chiropractors can adjust the toes and other bones of the foot to keep the joints moving properly. Additionally, chiropractors can prescribe specific night splints that help correct the position of the toes.” – Livestrong.com
