Improving Posture at Work, Part 2
Last week we discussed how poor posture at work can cause real problems for your overall well-being. I mentioned that at River Ridge Chiropractic, we can help you reverse or correct Postural kyphosis (often indicated by a forward head position and rounded shoulders) with a comprehensive approach that includes regular adjustments, acupuncture, proper foot care (including orthotics), and correcting muscle imbalances with specific exercises. This week, I want to focus on types of manual adjustment that may be used as part of treatment:
- Specific spinal manipulation: For this technique, I would identify the joints that are restricted or show abnormal motion, also called subluxations, and return motion to the joint with a gentle thrusting technique. This gentle thrusting rapidly stretches soft tissue and stimulates the nervous system to return normal motion to the spine.
- Instrument-assisted manipulation: This is another non-thrusting technique. Using a hand-held instrument, I can apply force without thrusting into the spine. This is especially appropriate in older patients with degenerative joint syndrome.
Additional treatments outside of adjustments include trigger point therapy, manual joint stretching and resistance techniques, and instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, which we’ll discuss next week. Stop by our Facebook page and Twitter feed this week for simple work posture tips that you can start implementing right away.
